Man Stabs 33-Year-Old Near Shuttered Church In Capital Region, Runs From Cops, Police Say

A 49-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing another man multiple times near a shuttered church in the region.

Emergency crews in Albany were called at around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, for a stabbing near Central Avenue and Robin Street.

The incident happened just steps from the Blessed Hope Worship Center, which is now listed as permanently closed.

Officers found a 33-year-old man suffering from stab wounds to his back and torso, according to Albany Police.

He was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, officers spotted a man matching the suspect description and attempted to stop him, but the man took off running.

Following a short chase, they arrested John Oliver roughly three blocks away, near First and Quail streets.

Oliver is charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police did not say whether the two men know each other or what led up to the attack.

Oliver was arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court and taken to the Albany County jail.
